Enchantment

Enchantment is a series of photographs taken on a cruise ship at sea when the Covid-19 pandemic broke out in North America. There were mixed signals about the severity of the coronavirus prior to setting sail. In many ways people didn’t understand the reality of what was happening globally, no thanks to the Trump administration. This particular voyage was one of the last trips allowed to leave port from the United States as well as one of the last ones to return. The ship was about half full. People on the boat had different responses to what they were all seeing in the news on their phones. Some people felt safer on the ship, others didn’t care at all, and some folks had a rising anxiety that was palpable. The staff on the boat were also in vulnerable situations related to their health and future livelihood. The cruise left Texas into a dense fog, made stops in Progreso and Cancun, and then returned to the US without any medical examinations in Galveston. This series was an exploration of human reactions to an unfathomable crisis and the stress of what awaited people at home.
